The Essequibo Islands Secondary School (EISS) celebrates its 40th anniversary today. The institution was so named because initially it served students of Wakenaam, Leguan and the other islands in the Essequibo River.? The location of the first school building was at Fredericksburg Village, Wakenaam Island.? It was a small building that originally housed the Fredericksburg Church of Scotland School.? The location of that building was ideal for both Wakenaam and Leguan students.Transportation, however, was very costly.? It was also hazardous for the Leguan students who had to cross the Essequibo River via launch.? The first principal of the school was Mr. Odho Dyal.? He only worked for one year.? He was succeeded by Mr. J. C. Palmar.? Mr Palmar also worked for a couple of months before Mr. William B. Alexander was appointed Principal. Persaud, who was appointed on January 1st, 1988.? Due to the deteriorating conditions of the buildings that housed the school at Fredericksburg Village, government sought a new school building in a suitable location on Wakenaam.? The roads on the island at that time were also in a terrible condition and students and teachers found it difficult to reach Fredericksburg Village.?By late 2003, a building was constructed under the Primary Education Improvement Project (PEIP) for a Primary School at Sans Souci Village and government was forced to let the Secondary School occupy that building. Despite the fact that the building was intended for children of primary school age, the students and teachers of the Essequibo Islands Secondary School made themselves “comfortable” in their new location.The school has been accepting children who wrote the SSEE. Over the years it has been producing remarkable results, even competing with some of the most renowned schools. At present almost the entire staff was once students of the school.There are 413 students enrolled; 208 are girls.? The school offers 11 subjects at the CSEC Exams.?HANDICAPSThe school is now bulging at its seams and there is need for more space as the building is overcrowded.? A shed that was intended to be used as a bicycle shed is currently being used for classes.? The school has an urgent need for a Science Laboratory.? There is also a great need for text books.? Recently, the school introduced Information Technology and telephone lines are needed to access the internet.There are vacancies for teachers in the Prevocational Subjects such as Industrial Arts,China Jerseys, Home Economics and Basic Electricity.The playfield, which was once a rice field, needs to be developed. The school also needs equipment so that the Physical Education programme could be done.? A Cuban trained teacher in Physical Education is currently employed at the school.
