, including two males. Despite the fact that the first six months were spent building trust among commissioners, training programmes were held. Some of them were conducted to build capacity among members, educating them of the various conventions on women and gender that Guyana would have signed onto.Chandarpal informed that meetings were held with a number of agencies including CIDA, USAID and UN Women, to garner support in terms of expertise. USAID has helped with three programmes including capacity building of commissioners and capacity building of Trade Unions.The Commission will be embarking on another training programme soon, focusing on data collection and research. , owing to the critical role they play in bridging the gender gap.During the year the commission also interfaced with stakeholders, and on International Women’s Day a conference was held targeting over 100 organisations. , and the commission engaged the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security in this regard.In light of the need to combat domestic violence, the commission held discussions with UN Women. Chandarpal indicated that in 1999 a Steering Committee was setup and further there are enough best practices that can be utilised.However, to garner the change that is needed, the communities need to be involved in fighting domestic violence, she noted, adding that there should be centres available for counseling. The Chairperson opined that public buildings should be utilised and persons should volunteer their services to this cause.One of the Commissioners, Nicole Cole, was a victim of domestic violence. Cole noted that she utilised the 1996 Domestic Violence Legislation to fight her case but was unsuccessful. Therefore the relevance of that legislation was questioned. Discussions were also held with officials from the Ministry of Education to ascertain what they are doing in relation to the Health and Family Life Education Programme.
