Law enforcement agents have been working feverishly around the clock to prosecute drug traffickers.They hope, one day, to halt what is widely believed to be one of the most profitable illicit economies.Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) and Police Narcotic ranks have been able to apprehend a number of outgoing passengers who attempted to smuggle narcotics out of the country in some of the most ingenuous ways at the main Ports of Entry.For this year, there have been several convictions resulting from these drug busts. There were other cases of persons being remanded to prison pending the outcome of a trial.Last Sunday, ranks from the Police Narcotics Unit on duty at the Ogle International Airport, East Coast Demerara, arrested a Guyanese national, who was an outgoing passenger with 17 kilograms, 572 grams of cannabis sativa (marijuana) in his luggage.The most recent case was that of 41-year-old Sadeeka Odie of 187 Thomas Street, Kitty, Georgetown. Odie was jailed for four years, two Mondays ago, in the Providence Magistrate’s Court for attempting to traffic 9.27 kilograms of cocaine in achar to the USA via the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) Timehri.Also on that same day, Surinamese national 21-year-old Damario Cheslie was jailed for three years, after admitting to having a parcel with cocaine concealed inside a condom in her vagina.Cheslie had also ingested 42 pellets containing cocaine. He had also confessed to swallowing 16 pellets containing cocaine.On February 19, three Immigration Officers and a female security guard attached to the CJIA Timehri were remanded to prison after cocaine was unearthed in the baggage hold of a Dynamic Airways flight at the John F.
