An already popular industry in Guyana is expected to get a US$77M boost in six years thanks to a Canadian Government initiative.The Canadian Government, through the Canadian Hunger Foundation (CHF), has turned its eyes to Guyana’s plantain industry with the aim of enhancing the industry’s productivity and marketing, not only locally but internationally.According to the CHF, the new initiative falls under the Promotion of Regional Opportunities for Produce through Enterprises and Linkages (PROPEL) project. These include the facilitation of linkages to market opportunities for local and overseas markets; the enhancement of production and improvement of management practices; training programs in plantain management/agronomy; farmer field schools; the provision of extension services; farmer to farmer/farm exchange visits; support for on farm research and demonstration plots/trials; and support to generate high quality planting materials through mass propagation systems.Furthermore, CHF said that it will aid to strengthen producers’ ability to respond to quality standard requirements of markets.According to CHF, farmers must meet a number of criteria to participate in the PROPEL project. CHF said that the producer can be an individual, business, producer group or cooperative entity engaged in primary agricultural production, with plantains being one of the crops cultivated in commercial quantities.
