The toilet bowl was not properly embedded in concrete, the mixture was poor and one only had to shake it for the toilet bowl to come out. Both doors were not properly secured at construction, only one tower bolt was used at the top of each door instead of the two normally used.”The matter was reported to both the Regional Administration and the police and is being investigated. Over the weekend, a source from the Guyana Police Force promised to look into the case.Mr. Johnson opined that there is an orchestrated attempt by forces unknown to frustrate the efforts of the pensioners, “We would not give up. We would fight to the end to be of some value to our community no matter what hurdles we are faced with. We are all pensioners, we have served faithfully. We would not allow those who think we do not deserve this building and that government’s money could have been invested on other things to win.”After no help was forthcoming, on Friday, the members of the pensioners association made a decision to secure the building using whatever funds they had at their disposal, “We hired two carpenters and they are removing all the remaining louvre panes and replacing them with reinforced concrete vent blocks. This is what the contractor should have done in the first instance because of the area in which the building is situated.”Carpenters replacing the missing panes.The structure is located just east of the New Amsterdam Post Office and was a deed of gift handed over in 1999 by the New Amsterdam Town Council.Mr. Johnson explained that Government gave $5M in 2005 to the local administration for the construction of the building. In 2006, the Region Six Democratic Council advertised a tender for its Capital Works Programme which included the construction of the structure for the pensioners’ association.
