PITTSBURGH (AP) — A federal grand jury has returned a new indictment in a heroin trafficking case that authorities believe was linked to the shooting death of a Pittsburgh woman last year, federal prosecutors said.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office said she couldn't comment Thursday on the Crawford investigation but noted Montgomery and Perrin face 25 years to life in prison if they're convicted of heroin trafficking and firearms charges. They're facing the stiff sentences because both are convicted felons who are not permitted to possess firearms, according to a news release announcing the charges.
That's because the new charges including money laundering counts against two men, Charles Cook, 48, of Pittsburgh, and Andre Avent, 37, of Homestead.
Defense attorneys for Montgomery, Cook and Avent didn't immediately return emails and phone calls for comment. Perrin's federal public defender has a blanket policy of not commenting to the media.
Cook and Avent face up to 20 years in prison if convicted.
But Pittsburgh police have previously said Crawford was shot by three gunmen inside her garage just days before she was to meet with state prosecutors investigating 34-year-old Price Montgomery and 35-year-old James Perrin for alleged heroin trafficking.
But Carolyn Myers, a former spokeswoman for the state attorney general's office, said in August that federal and state authorities were investigating the shooting, too.
Spokeswoman Sonya Toler said the Pittsburgh police investigation was "still ongoing and we are vigorously pursuing all leads."
